Making Sense of the Literature with Consensus: AI-Powered search for SMU

Making Sense of the Literature with Consensus: AI-Powered search for SMU Online

Consensus is an AI-powered academic search tool that SMU Libraries now subscribes until Aug 2026.. It combines a large scholarly index 200M) with large language models to answer research questions, surface relevant studies, and visualise the “consensus” of the literature. Consensus is available to everyone at SMU – including undergraduate and postgraduate students, research staff, faculty, and librarians. Just register with your SMU email.

Using real examples drawn from business, social sciences, and STEM topics, participants will see how Consensus can helpgenerate an initial overview of a topi, identify key studies and higher-quality evidence (e.g. RCTs, systematic reviews), map claims, findings, and research gaps across a body of literature.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how searches and Deep Searches in Consensus work

  • Interpret the Consensus Meter, quality tags, and visualisations with appropriate caution

  • Integrate Consensus into literature reviews and exploratory scans, alongside traditional databases

  • Decide when to use Consensus versus other tools such as Undermind.ai, Scopus AI, Perplexity, or traditional databases
